Fondant

The Art of Fondant

Fondant is a pliable sugar paste that gives a perfectly smooth, porcelain-like finish to the outside of a cake. Unlike buttercream, it provides a precise canvas for intricate detail work, sculpted 3D elements and character modelling - and it holds its shape well in warmer conditions, making it ideal for outdoor events.

Every fondant cake I make is covered and decorated entirely by hand. I work with a range of fondant colours and can mix custom shades to match any colour palette or theme exactly.

Techniques & Styles

Fondant Styles We Create

Fondant opens up a range of techniques that simply are not possible with buttercream alone.

Character Modelling

Bringing beloved characters to life - from Paw Patrol to Pokémon - using modelling fondant shaped and painted entirely by hand. Every detail is considered, down to the facial expression.

Smooth Covering

A flawlessly smooth fondant exterior - perfectly flat surfaces, clean edges and a professional finish that photographs beautifully and provides a clean base for any additional decoration.

Sculpted & 3D Elements

Structures, objects and three-dimensional features built in fondant and supported internally. From handbags to sports cars to fairy-tale castles - if you can imagine it, it can be built.

Geometric & Pattern Work

Precise geometric designs, repeating patterns, quilting, marbling and hand-cut decoration. Fondant holds its shape and colour with consistent accuracy, making it ideal for detailed pattern work.

Choosing Your Finish

Fondant or Buttercream?

Both finishes have their strengths. Here is a guide to help you decide - or get in touch and I will advise based on your specific design.

Choose Fondant When

  • The design requires intricate detail or sculpted 3D elements
  • You need character modelling or licensed theme work
  • The event is outdoors or in a warmer setting
  • You want bold, solid colours across a large surface
  • The cake needs to travel a significant distance or be displayed for several hours

Choose Buttercream When

  • Taste is the top priority - buttercream is richer and more popular with guests
  • You want textured finishes: rosettes, palette-knife texture or piped florals
  • You prefer a more rustic, handmade or vintage aesthetic
  • The recipient does not enjoy the texture of fondant
  • Budget is a primary consideration

Many cakes combine both - a fondant base with buttercream detail work, or buttercream florals added at delivery. I will guide you through the best approach for your specific design.

Care & Handling

Caring for Your Fondant Cake

Fondant cakes are straightforward to care for - follow these simple guidelines to keep yours looking its best.

Storage

Keep in a cool, dry room - not the fridge. Moisture from refrigeration softens and marks fondant surfaces.

Transport

Carry in the foot well of the vehicle, on a flat surface, with air conditioning on low. Avoid the boot if possible.

Timing

Fondant cakes are best enjoyed within 2 to 3 days of delivery for optimal freshness and flavour.

Temperature

Avoid direct sunlight and high heat. Fondant can soften and lose its shape if left in a warm environment for extended periods.
